ORONO – The University of Maine Black Bears used a hat trick by Andrea Steranko and a pair of goals from Karen Droog to quickly put away Wayne State for a 6-0 women’s hockey victory Friday.
Maine jumped out to an early 2-0 first-period lead after a pair of Steranko goals and never looked back as the Black Bears added a goal in the second and three more in the third.
Jarin Sjogren added a goal and an assist for Maine. Cheryl White, Meagan Aarts , and Tristan Desmet each notched a pair of assists, while Tracy Caridade, Rebecca Culver and Cailee Heggestad each had one assist.
Lara Smart (2-1-0) was perfect in the net with 20 saves for 6-7-1 Maine. Anna VanderMarliere (1-6-2) had 31 saves for 3-11-2 Wayne State.

UMFK, St. Joe’s gain wins
At Standish, the University of Maine-Fort Kent defeated Worcester (Mass.) State 68-67 and host St. Joseph’s topped Becker College of Leicester, Mass., 106-69 to advance to the championship game of the Mad Monk Tournament.
UM-Fort Kent and St. Joseph’s will play today at 3 p.m. The consolation game is set for 1 p.m.
In the first game, forward Morris Young pumped in 31 points on 9-18 shooting from the floor and a 9-9 effort from the line to lead the Bengals.
The Lancers’ Corry Carangelo scored what proved to be the final baskets of the game when he drained a pair of free throws to cut the Bengals’ lead to 68-67 with 56 seconds remaining. After Fort Kent missed two free throws and turned the ball over, Carangelo missed a 10-footer as time expired.
Barry Bryan added 10 points for UM-Fort Kent.
In the second game, the Monks put six players in double figures en route to the win.
