BANGOR – A celebration of Kwanzaa, an African-American holiday, will be held 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at the Unitarian-Universalist Church, 120 Park St.

The sponsor is the Bangor Area NAACP.

Food and music will be part of the celebration, and the event is free.

The seven principles of Kwanzaa are unity, collective work, purpose, self-determination, cooperative economics, creativity and faith.

Blacks all over the world participate in the holiday, but all are welcome to attend the activities in Bangor.

Traditionally, Kwanzaa runs from Dec. 26 through Jan. 1.

A striped flag of green, red and black represents pride in African heritage, but celebrations also include presents similar to Christmas, foods of thanksgiving, promises associated with New Year’s, and candles like the ones used by several faiths.

For information, call 827-4493 or 990-1729.
