Bangor home invader charged with assault

A Greenfield woman was visiting her sister in Bangor late Thursday night when she was assaulted by a man who had come uninvited into the Court Street apartment.

Richard Newell, 25, who lives in the same apartment building, was arrested after a bizarre confrontation with police and charged with assault, burglary and disorderly conduct. Newell also was wanted on a warrant.

The Greenfield woman told Officers Erik Tall and Brent Beaulieu that she didn’t know Newell but that he had entered her sister’s apartment after she did and yelled that he was going to kill her. He knocked her down on the bed and then onto the floor and kicked and punched her.

Newell was found upstairs, standing on his tiptoes by the sink, his pants and zipper loosened, Tall reported. The upstairs apartment was in disarray with furniture turned over and broken glass on the floor. Newell made furtive movements with one hand when asked to show his hands, prompting Tall to reiterate the order with his gun drawn. Newell fastened his pants and walked toward the officers where they took him to the floor in the hallway and arrested him.

An Old Town man claimed he wasn’t feeling any effects from the one beer he drank, although Bangor police said his erratic driving and performance on field-sobriety tests early Thursday morning suggested he had more beer than he was letting on.

An Intoxilyzer test confirmed the officers’ suspicions, registering the motorist’s blood-alcohol content at 0.14 percent or nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

As a result, Saleh A. Al-Otaibi, 23, was charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants.

Bangor police stopped Al-Otaibi after the red Chevrolet Camaro he was driving was seen weaving back and forth in the road and crossing the white fog sideline about 1:10 a.m.

Officer Brian Nichols noted that reported the car waited five to 10 seconds at a green light before moving forward and that the car’s brake lights were covered by tinting, a violation of inspection standards.

Nichols and Officer Steve Jordan stopped the car by the Irving Mainway convenience store on Main Street where Al-Otaibi swayed and nearly fell over once during field sobriety tests, despite the man’s claims that he had consumed only one beer at 9 p.m.
