I would like to address many others’ and my disgust with the ruling of the Board of Elevator and Tramways concerning the fixing of the problem of elevators since a child died in a freight elevator that they had determined to be in violation.
Where were the child’s parents? This being a freight elevator, why wasn’t the power shut off? Then, why didn’t the board go after the ones who allowed this tragedy to happen?
Their knee-jerk reaction was to send a person out to lock up all elevators that they determined to be in violation. In order to comply, all churches as well as other organizations that were complying with laws and rulings to make their buildings handicap accessible were forced to cover the cost of changing the dimensions of doors from two to five inches in thickness. This destroyed the fireproof integrity of the doors, which the state had mandated.
Thank you, Maine, for taking away from the churches involved. The money could have been used for missions or sending our kids to church camps.
Thank you, state legislators, who were contacted about this for being ignorant of what was going on or neglecting to reply to inquiries.
