A Bangor man was arrested Saturday morning for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor when police noticed that the vehicle he was driving had recently been in an accident.
Police noticed John Brown, 39, driving his 1994 Chevy Astro van at around 2 a.m. Saturday. The side of the van was heavily damaged, with the driver’s window shattered, according to a police report.
The vehicle accelerated quickly when the driver saw the police cruiser, said a Bangor Police Department report. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over at Newton Street, but the van, driven by Brown, pulled over several blocks away on Center Street after swerving several times on the slippery roads and running stop signs, said the report.
After the vehicle pulled over, the officer noticed bark on the side of the vehicle from a recent accident and glass from the broken window inside the collar of Brown’s jacket, the report said. Brown said he did not know what had happened to the vehicle, said the report.
Brown failed several field sobriety tests and refused to take an Intoxilyzer test, the report indicated. He was charged with failure to stop for police, failure to report a property damage accident, and operating while under the influence of alcohol.
Police are still looking for information regarding a burglary at the Main Street Burger King in Bangor.
Jacqueline Doak, a manager at the fast food restaurant, notified police early Sunday morning upon discovering that a freezer had been broken into. Bolt cutters had been used to break open a padlock to a freezer behind the restaurant.
Two packages of chicken tenders and one package of cheese sticks were taken. Costs for damage and the lost property are estimated at $21. The case is still under investigation.
