CALAIS – It was the same old blend of shooting and tough defense, and a chance to honor two of the girls who do it the best.

The Calais girls basketball team raced out to an 18-point lead at the end of the first quarter thanks to their full-court press and skill from the perimeter to record a 72-33 victory over Shead of Eastport Monday at the Calais High gymnasium.

Lanna Martin and Katie Frost were the undisputed stars of Monday’s game, as each girl scored the 1,000th point of her career in the first quarter. They led the Blue Devils with 17 and 13 points, respectively.

The Blue Devils, now 5-0, honored both girls during the game.

Frost was the first to reach the 1,000-point mark (she had 997 points going into the game and hit a 3-pointer off a pass from Nanci Feck 1:36 into the first quarter). Martin scored the next basket of the game, a layup off of a steal, 26 seconds after Frost’s hoop. She needed two points to hit 1,000 points.

Calais athletic director Chris Johnson, principal Jim Underwood, coach Bob McShane, teammates and cheerleaders presented each girl with a plaque, flowers, balloons and a teddy bear.

Shead coach Dean Preston didn’t mind halting the game twice.

“That’s what it’s all about,” he said.

Calais opened the Downeast Athletic Conference matchup with a full-court press that almost immediately forced Shead into turnovers and led to easy baskets on the other end. The Tigerettes came out in a 2-3 zone, which limited the Blue Devils inside but opened up the perimeter, and Calais responded with 3-pointers and jump shots. Martin finished the quarter with nine points and Frost had seven.

“We wanted to keep them from going off in the paint, make them take low-percentage jump shots, which on any given night they can beat you with,” Preston said.

To that end, the Tigerettes were successful. The Blue Devils were able to get inside for a few hoops, but never got into a rhythm in the post. Most of their baskets came on jumpers or fast-break layups (Calais went 5-for-13 from 3-point range).

Calais’ starting five (Lanna Martin and her sister Crystal Martin, Frost, Nanci Feck and Katie Smith) held Shead scoreless until Kristen Beaulieu hit a layup with 2:48 left in the period.

“We were trying to work on our man [defense] so we came out in that,” Lanna Martin said. “We wanted to work on our footwork because lately our defense has kind of been sloppy. We were trying to be mostly defensive-oriented.”

The Blue Devils held the Tigerettes to 12-for-36 shooting.

Preston said his young team (two seniors) isn’t equipped to handle the press just yet.

“They’re tough. We just don’t have anything to go to,” he said. “They were just giving us headaches in the backcourt. They do a good job and we don’t have the ball-handlers developed yet to handle that pressure.”

Nadine Bouchard and Beaulieu each scored 10 points to lead the Tigerettes, now 2-3.

Calais coach McShane worked in his substitutes early, and the bench responded with 31 points. Freshmen guards Emily Smith and Tracie Eagan each contributed nine points, and 5-foot-11 freshman forward Danielle O’Brien chipped in with six points.

“Our freshman squad is definitely coming,” Lanna Martin said. “You can see the improvement from the beginning of the year.”
