GREENBUSH – A man was left homeless Monday after an early morning fire gutted his small house on the Upper River Road.

William Cox was on his way home from working the night shift about 7 a.m. when fire tore though his one-story home, according to fire officials.

Some of the first firefighters on the scene Monday, seeing a vehicle in the driveway, feared the worst.

“He lost everything,” Greenbush firefighter Ed Holman said Monday afternoon. “But we all felt better when he showed up.”

No one was home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries.

Crews from Greenbush, Milford and Passadumkeag went to the scene after a neighbor reported the fire.

Cox, whose property was partially insured, reportedly is staying with family in the area.

The cause of the fire was unknown Monday afternoon.
