BANGOR – The children’s department of the Bangor Public Library offers a week of holiday specials to chase away those post-holiday blues and build excitement for the new year. The following is a list of events:
. Wednesday, Dec. 24, at 3 p.m. is “Movie Time!” “Antarctic Antics” is the 2001 recipient of the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Children’s Video. This animated video takes the penguin poems from the book by Judy Sierra and sets them to delightful music. Visit a colony of emperor penguins, enjoy entertaining music and leave with “warm feelings for the coldest place on earth.” Recommended for ages 4-8. Popcorn, too.
. Thursday, Dec. 27, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. is “Comics with Rick Clarke.” Maine artist Rick Clarke will conduct a cartooning workshop. He loves to encourage young people in comic book art and his 90-minute workshop will involve creating a cartoon character and short story to accompany it. Ages 10 to 16. Registration is required and limited to 25 children.
. Friday, Dec. 28, at 11 a.m. is “Fun with Flutes.” Hawk Henries, creator of hand-tooled flutes, will offer a musical experience that will involve “wonderful stories and humor that will remind us of the wonderful gifts life has to offer.
. Saturday, Dec. 29, is “Primary Steps in Music.” This program is a sneak preview of Lorilyn Buie’s Suzuki-based music school. To introduce her methods and style, she will offer two sessions for different age groups. Each session is limited to 12 children, and registration is required. The 11 a.m. session is for ages 18 months to 3 years, and the 12:30 p.m. session is for 3- to 5- year-olds.
