Girls, boys gain wins for Brewer over Ellsworth Witches’ depth too much for Eagles

BANGOR – The Ellsworth boys and girls swim teams had the front-line talent to contend, but not the depth to beat Brewer Friday night.

The Class A Witches held on to sweep the Class B Eagles in a Penobscot Valley Conference meet at the Bangor-Brewer YWCA’s Aloupis Pool. The Brewer girls rolled to a 96-63 win, while the Brewer boys held on for a 77-69 victory.

Both teams had strong individual performances: Ben Lam, Chris Sighinolfi and Sarah Guppy each won two events for the Witches, while Matt Jordan and Marianne Greenhalgh won two events apiece for Ellsworth.

In the boys meet, the Eagles and Witches provided some drama in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay. Sophomore Matt Jordan anchored the Eagles to the win.

Brewer’s Mike Sighinolfi had a lead of about two seconds on Jordan with 25 yards to go, but Jordan caught him with about 10 yards to go and touched out Brewer with a time of 3 minutes, 56.16 seconds.

“That was exciting. I wish I could have watched it,” said Jordan, who also won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke. “I just dove in and I didn’t want to get out too fast. But the second 50, something just snapped and I couldn’t see anything. I was just going hard. The third flip [turn] I knew I had to bring it home.”

An Eagle squad of Ian Jordan, James Silsby, Tom Perkins and Jaques Tardie won the 200 free relay.

“The relays were really key for us,” Ellsworth coach Matt Montgomery said. “Those events get us really psyched up, to see that we can compete and stay up there with the bigger teams.”

Brothers Chris and Mike Sighinolfi brothers swam on the winning 200 medley relay team with Lam and Chris Rodway.

Chris Sighinolfi won the 200 free and the 100 free. Mike Sighinolfi finished first in the 500 free. Lam took the 100 breaststroke and the 50 free.

Erik Rae, Gilman Thibeault, Scotty Grant and Jeffrey Goodness provided key points for the Witches. Goodness and Thibault went 4-5 in the 100 free, while Jason Littlefield, Grant, Rae and Thibault were third in the 400 free relay.

“Our new kids [Grant, Rae and Thibault] have been swimming unbelievably well,” Brewer coach Kathy Cahill said. “Of course, the Sighinolfi brothers and Ben Lam are critical for us.”

Ellsworth did not have a diver competing, which cleared the way for Rodway and Littlefield to go 1-2 in the diving.

In the girls meet, the Witches relied on solid swims by Guppy, a junior who joined the team this season after previously swimming for the private Hurricane Swim Club.

Guppy led off Brewer’s 200 medley relay squad to a win in 2:25.50, then won the 200 free in 2:17.42 and the 500 free in 5:54.68.

Her race strategy worked perfectly in the 500, she said.

“I try to take it out a little easier, build after the 200 and try to keep that pace for the rest of it,” she said. “I’m very happy with how we did today. I’m excited.”

Other winners for Brewer included Kate Hanlon in the 100 fly, Amanda Jewell in the 100 back, and Meredith McEwen in the 100 free.

Guppy, Hanlon, Jessica Stanacroce and Candice Wilcox won the 200 medley relay. Guppy, McEwen, Shannon Adams and Hanlon took the 400 free relay.

Marianne Greenhalgh led the Eagles with wins and personal bests in the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke.

An Ellsworth squad of Katie Donlin, Courtney Rausch, Bree Walsh and Meagan Batson came from behind in the 200 free relay and won with a time of 2:10.84.

The Eagles, swimming in lane 3, and the Witches in lane 4 battled back and forth with Rausch taking the lead at the 100-yard mark. Brewer’s Krystal Baker regained the lead in the third leg, but Batson made up the distance in the anchor leg and zoomed ahead of Brewer in the final five meters.

Batson finished second to Greenhalgh in the breaststroke.

“That’s been one of our strengths,” Montgomery said. “The 50 free produced good results as well. So we had a really good meet.”

Sara Stephens, who attends Hampden Academy but competes with the Brewer team as an exhibition swimmer, broke the Hampden school record in the 200 IM with a time of 2:33.06. The old record was 2:36, Cahill said.
