Mulligan basket lifts PVHS past Dexter boys

HOWLAND – Matt Mulligan scored from the low post off a Morgan Doyon assist in the closing seconds Friday night to lift Penobscot Valley to a 57-55 schoolboy basketball victory over Dexter.

Jesse Cummings scored seven points in the fourth quarter to help the Howlers hand the Tigers their first loss of the season. Brad Harris led Penobscot Valley with 22 points. Mulligan finished with 15.

Dexter missed one last shot at the buzzer.

Travis Patterson connected on six 3-point attempts while leading Dexter with 28 points. Erik Cooley scored 16.

At East Sullivan, senior forward Roman Jordan scored a career-high 15 points to help Sumner pull away from Mount Desert Island.

Jordan and J.J. Phinney had six points apiece in the fourth quarter as Sumner outscored MDI 17-7.

Jamey Polk had 15 points and six rebounds for the winners while MDI received 14 points from Ryan Colbeth and nine from Greg Fellis.

At Greenville, senior forward Tyler Muzzy scored his 1,000th career point on a pair of free throws with four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter as Greenville rolled over Rangeley.

Muzzy finished with 23 points and 17 rebounds. He was 23 points shy of the 1,000-point mark heading into the game.

Bobby Gilbert chipped in with 19 points for the Lakers.

For Rangeley, Neil Stewart notched 16 and Jim Goodwin put in 10.

At Houlton’s Millar Arena, senior center Pat Skall scored a career-high six goals and assisted on another to power undefeated and untied Orono to its third win.

Mike Merritt had a goal and an assist and Will Toner and Mark Caggiano each added goals. Branislav Srnka had two assists with Nick Dwyer and Paul Pangburn picking up one each. Nate Faulstick made 29 saves.

Merritt broke a 3-3 tie in the second period and Skall added two of his six to supply the Riots with a three-goal cushion entering the final period.

Josh Moore and Drew Somers had a goal and an assist apiece with Matt Michaud and Tyler Pelkey notching the other goals. Nick Simon made 38 saves.

Girls basketball

Hermon 39, Caribou 38

At Caribou, Jessica Wiggin scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning layup off her own steal with 45 seconds left, to rally Hermon past Caribou.

Hermon, which outscored Caribou 15-7 in the fourth quarter, was led by Ashley Hichborn’s 12 points. Rachel Jenkins and Wiggin each had eight.

Jessica Cyr had a game-high 16 points and Leah Drew’s 11 paced Caribou.

At Calais, the Blue Devils used a swarming full-court press to create numerous turnovers and outscore the Dragons 29-6 in the third quarter on their way to a decisive victory in a game between two 2001 state champions.

Lanna Martin led Class C Calais with 16 points, including eight in the third quarter, while Crystal Martin tallied 10 of her 15 points in the period. Katie Frost tossed in 13 points.

Woodland was without leading scorer Ashley Marble, who sat out after injuring her left hand in a game against East Grand earlier this week. Julia Knights paced the Class D Dragons with 13 points and Kaitlyn Leeman added nine.
