It is Christmas Eve, a day that is special to many people for many reasons. It may be the coming together of family and friends for the holidays. It may be midnight Mass or other Christmas Eve church services. Or perhaps it is the wrapping or unwrapping of presents; the expectant laughter of children; the enjoyment of traditional holiday foods or the quiet wonder and awe of the most holy of nights.

Many of us will share the joy of this day, even amidst the rush of last-minute tasks. Yet, for many, this day, and Christmas Day especially, will be less than joyous due to poverty or hard times. But thanks to The Salvation Army and the Santa’s Helper Fund, many needy people will experience a little Christmas with their children and families. Many will be provided with food and clothing, and children will find a toy or two under the tree after all.

The Salvation Army has received hundreds of letters from people requesting assistance this holiday season. Here are excerpts from some:

“My children and I have recently moved here. We live in a house that has no furniture and only the clothes we got from the Salvation Army. My husband left us and we were homeless for a while. My children need so much and deserve something for Christmas. Unfortunately I won’t be able to give them anything.”

“I really need help this year because my only income at this point is $710 a month from SS, which my daughter receives from her father who committed suicide not long ago. She is a beautiful child and rarely asks for much. Anyway, we would be very appreciative of your help.”

“I am a widow with two children. I do work but I still barely make enough to make ends meet. With all the bills to pay, we survive on what we have left over until our next check. Money is very tight this year. Without your help my family would have a very small Christmas, if one at all.”

Letters simply expressing appreciation for the Santa’s Helper effort also come in, like these:

“Happy Holidays! While I realize this is a very small donation, I mostly just wanted to tell you all how much I appreciate this wonderful thing you do, year after year. As a Bangor native, I also want to say thank you for being so concerned about our community. Take care.”

“My husband and I wish to commend you all on a very worthy case of helping all who are in need, especially at Christmastime.”

Donations may be sent to Santa’s Helper Fund, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor 04402-1329. Names and donation amounts will be published in the Santa’s Helper column in the Bangor Daily News. Donors who prefer to remain anonymous will be listed as such, followed by donation amounts. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
