Children find homes through 2001 columns

The Maine-ly Children column is 25 months old and has promoted more than 30 children for adoption. Most children appearing in the twice-a-month column have generated calls to adoption caseworkers and three have found permanent families since the column started in November 1999. Two more are on their way to finding families from a pool of 14 foster children profiled in the year 2001 alone.

As the holiday season winds to a close, it is an appropriate time to review some adoption success stories and wish the state’s foster children, foster parents and adoptive families all the best in the year 2002.

Skyi, a bright, well-spoken 14-year-old profiled last June, appears to have found a permanent family and adoption is in the works. Fawn, a charming 6-year-old girl also profiled in June, is “well on her way” to a permanent home, according to someone close to her foster family.

Others generating calls this year include Aaron, a 9-year-old computer whiz profiled in a July 28 column; Angelica, an engaging 10-year-old girl profiled in a July 14 column; and Rubin, an inquisitive 14-year-old boy profiled in a June 2 column.

A Family for Me, an agency that works with the state to link adoptive families with foster children, also has received serious inquiries on several children profiled during the fall.

Statewide, there are about 3,000 children in state custody and 2,000 of these are living in foster homes. The remaining 1,000 children are in group homes or institutions.

The state has about 1,500 foster families but needs more.

Those interested in adoption or in becoming foster parents may contact their nearest Department of Human Services office to get more information. Another contact is A Family for Me, at (877) 505-0545.
