Driver hurt in single-car crash New Sweden resident loses control of vehicle on Route 161

GUERRETTE VILLAGE – A New Sweden man suffered minor injuries Thursday night when he lost control of his car, which went off Route 161 and rolled over an embankment.

Eric Lagasse, 51, was treated Thursday evening and released from Northern Maine Medical Center at Fort Kent. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance after being extricated from the vehicle by rescue personnel using hydraulic equipment from the Fort Kent Volunteer Fire Department.

Lagasse was stuck upside down in the vehicle for about 25 minutes.

Maine State Police Trooper Corey Hafford said the accident happened at about 5:20 p.m. less than one mile south of St. Peter’s Grocery in Township 17 Range 5. Hafford attributed the accident to excessive speed.

Lagasse was northbound in his 1991 two-door Chevrolet Cavalier when he lost control on a downhill curve. He went off the road, striking a culvert and rolling over into a 3-foot-high embankment.

Hafford said Lagasse overcorrected in his attempt to regain control of the vehicle. He struck a culvert, which caused his vehicle to roll over. His car slid on its roof for a distance.

Lagasse was alone and no other vehicles were involved in the incident. Lagasse was not wearing a seat belt.

Hafford was continuing his investigation Friday. He reconstructed the accident, but had not completed his analysis to determine Lagasse’s speed.
