Fatal crash blamed on snowstorm

DOVER-FOXCROFT – Slick roads from a quick-moving snowstorm on New Year’s Eve contributed to a head-on collision on Route 7 that killed Alderia Bailey, 73, of Dexter, police said.

Harold Stade, 81, of Greenville was traveling north at about 7 p.m. in a van towing an empty travel trailer when the trailer started swaying below the crest of Goodwin’s Hill on the Dover side, according to Dover-Foxcroft police. Stade lost control of the van and it crossed the road and collided head-on with a southbound vehicle driven by Bailey’s son David Bailey, 55, of Dexter, said Police Chief Dennis Dyer.

A witness to the accident was Mark Poulin, an off-duty state trooper, who was traveling behind Stade’s vehicle.

Dyer said the impact killed Alderia Bailey, who was a passenger in the rear seat. David Bailey received cuts and bruises, and his wife, Norma, 48, who was a passenger in the front seat, suffered internal injuries. Stade received minor injuries in the accident, Dyer said. Everyone was wearing seat belts, according to police.

David and Norma Bailey and Stade were taken by ambulance to Mayo Regional Hospital. David Bailey and Stade were treated for their injuries and released. Norma Bailey reportedly was in stable condition Tuesday at the Dover-Foxcroft hospital.

The body of Alderia Bailey was taken from the accident scene to the Crosby and Neal Funeral Home in Dexter.

Bailey’s 1996 Buick LeSabre was demolished. Damage to Stade’s 1992 Ford van was estimated at $4,000.

The accident remains under investigation, according to Dyer.

Assisting Dover-Foxcroft police at the scene were the Dover-Foxcroft Fire Department, Mayo Hospital Ambulance personnel and the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department.
