PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Adam Staier, a senior at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, smashed the one-mile racewalk meet record Saturday at the 20th Brown Interscholastic Relays. Staier’s time of 6 minutes, 44.60 seconds, shattered the record of 6:58.91 set last year by Ben Shorey of Ellsworth. Jon Chasse of Maranacook of Readfield was second in 7:26.59. Mark Dennett of Winthrop and Aaron Whitten of Ellsworth were fourth and fifth, respectively.
Maria Michta of Sachem, N.Y., reset the girls record with a time of 7:49.43. Michta, runner-up Hillary Easter (8:06.62) of Jay, and third-place Jasmine Brooks (8:09.15) of Dirigo in Dixfield all broke Easter’s year-old mark of 8:20.
Staier, Chasse, Easter and Brooks qualified to represent Maine in March at the National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships in New York City and the Nike Classic Scholastic Track and Field Championships in Landover, Md.
