Mock trials

The final competition of the Maine High School Mock Trials has been rescheduled for noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, in Portland Superior Court. Newly confirmed Chief Justice Leigh I. Saufley will preside.

Also on the bench will be Colleen Khoury, dean of the University of Maine School of Law, and Elizabeth Scheffee, president of the Maine Bar Association. The finalists are Hampden Academy and Cape Elizabeth High School.

The mock trials are an academic competition in which teams prepare and try a case in an actual courtroom.

Mock trials educate students about the legal system, the judicial process, the attorney’s role and the rules of evidence while teaching effective communication, critical thinking, principles of advocacy and teamwork. This year, the students are trying a criminal case involving alleged date rape on a fictional college campus.

The competition is open to the public, though space is limited.
