CALAIS – Two Massachusetts men made an initial appearance Thursday in Calais District Court in connection with the theft of a prescription drug from the Perry Veterinary Clinic.
Sean Ryan Barrett, 19, of Medford, Mass., and John B. Mucci, 19, of North Andover, Mass., each are charged with Class C burglary.
The two men allegedly broke into the Perry clinic on Jan. 2 and stole mannitol, a drug that is used to treat animals suffering from shock.
Maine State Police Trooper Micah Perkins responded to the burglary complaint, according to an affidavit by Assistant District Attorney Paul Cavanaugh on file in Calais District Court.
Perkins found a broken window, damage to the alarm keypad and a distinct set of boot prints that led around the clinic, stopping near the windows. Perkins passed the information on to local law enforcement agencies, according to the affidavit.
Barrett and Mucci were arrested early Thursday morning when Calais Police Officer Bradley Bouton stopped their vehicle on Lafayette Street.
The car previously had been identified as being at the scene of a graffiti incident that occurred in Calais over the weekend, according to the affidavit.
Mucci was driving and there was an open 30-pack of beer on the floor between the seats. In searching the car, Bouton found in a potato chip bag a bottle of liquid medicine containing 25 percent mannitol, and another bottle under the driver’s seat.
Bouton arrested both men on charges of possession of a scheduled drug. Noticing the boots the suspects were wearing, Bouton radioed the results of his investigation to Perkins.
Perkins interviewed both men at the Calais police station. Barrett remained silent, but Mucci told the officer that he and Barrett broke into the clinic and took the drugs, according to the affidavit.
Both men are being held on $40,000 bail with a single surety or $10,000 cash.
