Charleston driver hurt when vehicle hits house

LITTLETON – A Charleston man was in stable condition Thursday at Houlton Regional Hospital after an accident on Route 1 Wednesday afternoon.

Philip Buchanan, 75, was driving north shortly after 1 p.m. when he reached down to get something and lost control of his car.

The car went off the right side of the road and traveled about 200 feet through a ditch, between two trees and across a driveway before it struck the home of Avis Hanning, 75, according to Trooper Brian Harris of the Maine State Police.

Hanning was in another part of the house at the time and was not hurt.

Buchanan, who was wearing a seat belt, complained of back pain. The Houlton Ambulance took him to the hospital where he was admitted. His injuries were not considered life-threatening, Harris said.

Buchanan’s 1994 Dodge pickup truck was a total loss, Harris said. He estimated damage to Hanning’s house at $10,000.

Aroostook County Sheriff James Madore and the Houlton Fire Department Rescue Team also responded to the accident.
