ORONO – The University of Maine overcame a two-goal deficit but it wasn’t enough as the Providence College Friars scored a 5-3 women’s ice hockey Friday.
Providence scored two first-period goals off the sticks of Hilary Greaves and Danielle Culgin.
Maine tied the game in the second period. Tracy Caridade scored on a power play 3:46 into the period with assists from Jarin Sjogren and Kelly Nelson. Karen Droog then notched the first of her two goals at 9:01. Sjogren assisted on the goal.
Providence regained its two-goal lead (4-2) with goals from Carrie Holldorf and Jenn Butsch.
Droog scored her second goal of the game in the third period. She was assisted by Nelson and Rebecca Ouellette.
Darlene Stephenson added an empty-net goal as the Friars secured the win.
Lara Smart made 19 saves for Maine, now 7-9-1 overall, 1-6-1 in the ECAC.
Amy Thomas picked up the win with 24 stops for Providence (6-8-2, 3-4-1).

At Halifax, Nova Scotia, Morris Young led a balanced attack with 17 points as the Bengals prevailed.
Darry Bryan popped in 15 for the winners, while Andrew Clavette added 14. Chad Gervais notched 13.
