Dartmouth has struggled on the penalty kill (78.6 percent success rate). Maine’s last two Portland appearances have been overtime ties against Northeastern (3-3) and Cornell (2-2). This will be Maine’s final non-league game. Maine is 5-4-2 in non-league games. Outlook: Riding the emotion of Thursday’s dramatic 63-62 overtime comeback win over Binghamton, the Bears head on the road to face the Seawolves. UMaine has won three straight and six of its last seven, but will contend with a high-powered Stony Brook team that averages 68.6 ppg and has won three straight. The Seawolves, coached by former UMaine boss Trish Roberts (1988-92), are one of three league newcomers. SBU likes to utilize its quickness in an uptempo game, but the ‘Wolves are suspect on the defensive end, ranking 8th in scoring defense (68.2 ppg) and 8th in FG percentage defense (.423). UMaine looks to continue its steady defense, which ranks first in FG percentage defense (.364) and third in scoring defense (62.3). The Bears, who have won four in a row on the road, continue lead America East in rebounding.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
Maine vs. Stony Brook
Time, site: 4 p.m. Sunday, USB Sports Complex, Stony Brook, N.Y.
Records: Maine 4-8 (1-0 America East), Stony Brook 1-12 (0-2)
Series, last meeting: Maine leads 3-0, Maine won 67-55 on Dec. 30, 1999
Key players: Maine – 6-3 G Errick Greene (21.0 ppg, 6.2 rpg), 6-7 F Clayton Brown (15.5 ppg, 5.2 rpg), 7-0 C Justin Rowe (13.7 ppg, 8.4 rpg, 3.75 bpg), 6-4 F Rickey White (7.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg), 6-2 G Derrick Jackson (5.5 ppg, 2.8 rpg), 6-6 F Joe Campbell (5.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg); Stony Brook – 6-3 G Dawud Munir (17.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg), 6-8 F Mike Konopka (8.2 ppg, 3.6 rpg), 6-5 F Jairus McCollum (7.4 ppg, 4.6 rpg), 6-5 G/F Mike Orfini (7.3 ppg, 3.8 rpg), 6-8 F J.B. Bennett (5.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg)
Outlook: First-year America East entry Stony Brook has searched for a winning combination all year long (10 players have started at least one game), but hasn’t found that lucky combo yet. Albany had some success with its zone defense against the Bears on Wednesday, and the Seawolves may want to do the same. By playing man-to-man against Maine, a team is assuring itself of two big mismatches: Greene drives by big men and posts up shorter guards, while the 7-foot Rowe is most effective when the Bears don’t have to lob into traffic. Campbell has emerged as a legitimate 3-point threat, as has Brown, who lost minutes to an effective White during the win over Albany.

Outlook: The Huskies are in their second year of varsity status and are an up-and-coming program under the direction of former Northeastern coach Heather Linstad and generous funding by their administration. They own a win over New Hampshire and only one of their losses has been by more than two goals. They have allowed three goals or less in 13 of their 16 games prior to Friday night’s game against Northeastern. Maine is coming off a 5-3 Friday afternoon loss to Providence. UConn’s roster is comprised of all freshmen and two sophomores. They have some skillful players. Maine is going to have to play well to win.
