CALAIS – A call is out for rugged and fearless souls who are not afraid to dip more than their big toes into the icy Atlantic.

Tess Ftorek, Washington County Technical College student support counselor, is leading the search for new polar bears.

“It’s actually quite enjoyable and definitely invigorating,” Ftorek said of a January dive into the icy waters of Passamaquoddy Bay.

Invitations are being extended to local businesses, civic groups, fire and police departments to get involved in WCTC’s second annual Polar Bear dip.

The event will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Gleason’s Cove boat ramp in Perry.

“Last year we raised thousands of dollars for the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor,” Ftorek said. “We had more than 200 people either dipping or cheering. The Passamaquoddy Tribe and area businesses like Marden’s [Surplus and Salvage in Calais] helped us raise money and collect needed items.”

The Ronald McDonald House in Bangor is as a temporary residence for critically ill children who are being treated at area hospitals and their families. So far, we have two other campuses from the Maine Technical College System that will participate this year,” said John Miller, director of public affairs for WCTC. There will be campfires, hot dogs and hot chocolate. The ambulance and rescue service from Pleasant Point will be on hand. For information call Ftorek at 454-1000.
