BANGOR – A Dexter man arrested in November for allegedly shooting at his son during a family altercation was indicted Monday by a Penobscot County grand jury on several charges including attempted murder.

Wayne Elliott, 57, was indicted on charges of attempted murder, attempted aggravated assault, criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon in the Nov. 24 incident in Dexter.

Elliott remains in the Penobscot County Jail where he has been incarcerated since his arrest that evening. His bail is set at $100,000 with one surety or 20 percent cash.

Penobscot County Assistant District Attorney Greg Campbell said the trouble began when Elliott’s son, William Elliott, went to the family’s home on Upper Garland Road to retrieve some of his mother’s belongings. The family had been feuding and the mother planned to spend the night elsewhere, Campbell said.

The elder Elliott allegedly hit his son on the head with a flashlight and then pointed a pistol at his son and pulled the trigger, Campbell said.

“The gun just clicked,” Campbell said, “and William got out of there and got into his car.”

Wayne Elliott allegedly followed his son outside and fired numerous shots that struck the car.

The attempted murder charge carries a potential 40-year sentence.

A 43-year-old Bangor man was indicted on a charge of reckless or criminally negligent manslaughter Monday in the November death of a Bangor man who police say was beaten to death.

Bruce Mann faces the charges in connection with Nov. 9 death of 40-year-old Jack Sears at Sears’ apartment at 217 Broadway.

Mann remains in Penobscot County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

According to court documents, Mann told one witness that he “kicked [Sears] and stuff and crushed his face … with his foot,” and “did do damage to him,” after an altercation on the building’s first floor.

Witnesses initially told police that Sears was intoxicated and tripped over a cat and fell from the second-floor landing to the first-floor entryway of the apartment building.

Subsequent witness interviews revealed that Mann brutally beat Sears after an argument, police said.

Mann could face up to 40 years in prison if convicted.
