BANGOR – Bail was set at $100,000 surety or $25,000 cash for Christopher Seavey, a local man who is charged with seriously injuring a Bangor Wal-Mart employee Friday who confronted him after he allegedly tried to steal a car stereo.

Seavey, 19, of Hermon and Ellsworth, made an initial appearance Monday in 3rd District Court in Bangor. He is charged with robbery and aggravated assault, both felonies. If convicted, he faces the possibility of up to 30 years in prison on both counts.

At the time of the Wal-Mart incident, Seavey was on bail for an October 2000 burglary charge. A trial on that charge is scheduled for Jan. 28.

District Court Judge Ronald Russell set bail at $100,000 surety or $25,000 cash. Seavey remained at Penobscot County Jail on Monday night.

Deborah Sanborn, 34, remained in the intensive care unit at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after emergency head surgery. She was listed in fair condition Monday night. Sanborn, whose title is “loss prevention expert,” reportedly saw Seavey put a car stereo under his arm at about 2 p.m. and leave the store without paying for it. She and a male security guard confronted Seavey in the parking lot where Seavey dropped the stereo and struggled with the store officials. At one point, Seavey and the two employees fell to the ground and Sanborn smashed her head. According to police, she eventually got up and went back into the store. Colleagues called 911 after a large bump appeared to be swelling on the back of her head. Sanborn was diagnosed with swelling of the brain, and underwent emergency surgery Friday night.

“As I understand it, it was a life-threatening injury,” said Greg Campbell, assistant district attorney for Penobscot County.
