BANGOR – As part of its annual program to help a local charity during the holiday shopping season, Wal-Mart in Bangor made a donation to the Bangor Area Homeless Shelter.

The donation of $5,050 was based on a percentage of profits made between 7 a.m. and noon Dec. 1.

The Bangor store made its decision to help the shelter after receiving a letter from two participants in the Downeast Big Brothers Big Sisters program – mentor Chris Olsen of Bangor and his “little brother,” David Anderson from Orono.

In addition, Wal-Mart associates made a sizable contribution of food, coffee and other items to the shelter based on the facility’s “wish list.”

The support from the community comes as a very crucial time, explained shelter director Dennis Marble. The shelter’s annual appeal is under way.
