10 years ago – Jan. 10, 1992

Staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Healthy Heart Program are encouraged that 63 people from around eastern Maine have signed up already for the program’s Quit and Win Contest, pledging that they will give up smoking from Jan. 14 to Feb. 21.

“We’re really pleased,” said Wendie Lagasse. “We’re hoping for up to 100 or so again this year.” Entries have come from as far as Skowhegan, Norridgewock, Corea, Fort Fairfield and Penobscot,” she said.

Bangor stands to lose $350,000 as a result of state budget cuts, and to cope with the loss the city manager scrounged $425,000 in savings from the municipal budget.

The cut in state aid represents Bangor’s share of the $12.1 million whack the Legislature and governor took from Municipal Revenue Sharing for the remainder of the fiscal year.

25 years ago – Jan. 10, 1977

The Bangor Rams converted 38 tries from the foul line into 24 valuable points in a 56-43 Class A schoolboy basketball victory over the Caribou Vikings Friday night.

Although Caribou outscored the Rams 18-16 from the floor, the Vikings were charged with 32 fouls. Bangor, paced by defensive standout Tim Higgins’ 12 points, and Bruce Withington’s and Brian Braveman’s 11 apiece, dominated 33-14 at the half.

Kevin Flynn scored 20 points Saturday evening as the Orono High School Red Riots stopped Mattanawcook Academy 78-57, for their fourth win in six games.

Mike Belleau and Dave Paul combined for 12 first-quarter points as the Riots raced to a 17-9 advantage and never trailed. The Lynx managed to stay within striking distance until the Riots reeled off six straight points to start the final period.

50 years ago – Jan. 10, 1952

At a recent meeting of Eastern Star Grange it was voted to hold a square dance in the town hall, Jan. 18, to raise money for a contribution to the March of Dimes. Arrangements are being made by the Home and Community Welfare Committee.

It was also voted to allow the Hampden Extension group the use of the Grange hall, Jan. 25 for a public card party to be held for the same purpose.

Major Denis Lombardi, Maine Ground Observer Corps coordinator, addressed the Brewer Parent-Teacher Association at its meeting Monday night in the Brewer High School Auditorium.

Major Lombardi stressed particularly the importance of observation posts, stating that there should be one set up every eight miles throughout the state. He also emphasized the necessity of volunteers to begin training at once at the Filter Center and the Observation Posts.

100 years ago – Jan. 10, 1902

At a meeting in the law offices of William H. Waterhouse Wednesday afternoon, the lots at Beechwood Park at Pushaw Lake were drawn. Many of those who took lots will begin at once to clear their property. Beechwood is about 8 miles from Old Town and about three- quarters of a mile from Kukunscok.

The linemen of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company have commenced the work of installing the additional instruments secured on the first three-month trial plan. The following is a list of new subscribers:
