BANGOR – It’s time to read, city councilors decided Monday.

A proclamation approved during the Bangor City Council meeting Jan. 14 designated Jan. 2 through Feb. 16 as a time for “Bangor Reads.”

The council also urged residents to attend activities at Bangor Public Library during that period, and to join in reading Michael Shaara’s Civil War novel “The Killer Angels.”

The proclamation also noted Bangor as “a community of readers,” and pointed out that the library has been recognized nationally for both “its quality and for the high circulation levels it achieves.”

Also on Monday, the council recognized employees of the Bangor Wastewater Treatment Plant for their efforts in reducing operating costs and improving efficiency at the plant.

In particular, the proclamation noted that employee efforts to reduce operating costs have contributed to the fact that sewer user fees have not increased since February 1996.

In one instance, maintenance and operations staff made modifications to clarifying equipment for a total of $3,600, even though a consultant had estimated the cost at $18,400.

Mayor Michael R. Crowley signed both of the proclamations.
