Eastman lifts Ashland by Beavers

WASHBURN – Matt Eastman connected for 19 points to help the Ashland Hornets beat the Washburn Beavers 54-49 in schoolboy basketball action Wednesday night.

Buck Pineau chipped in with 10 for Ashland.

Dan Buckley paced Washburn with 13 points and nine rebounds. Darren Pesut added 10 points.

At Caribou Tuesday, Joel Griffeth sank a couple of clutch free throws with 16 seconds left to expand the lead to three and the Vikings held on, surviving a Jason Frenette basket with 10 seconds left.

Caribou avenged a 58-55 setback in Houlton on Dec. 13.

Griffeth finished with 24 points, including 13 in the second quarter to help Caribou overcome a five-point deficit. Tyler Giles notched 20 with eight of those coming in the fourth quarter.

Frenette’s game-high 25 points and James Skehan’s 14 paced Houlton.

At Mars Hill Tuesday, James McLaughlin hit a 3-pointer, his seventh of the game, with three seconds remaining to give the Tigers the victory Tuesday.

Central Aroostook had rallied from a 14-point deficit after three quarters to take the lead at 65-64.

McLaughlin led all scorers with 24 points, Aaron Kenneson added 17, and Ryan Helstrom had 15.

Dan Codrey topped the Panthers with 21 points, and Andy Grivois and Lance Bradstreet posted 17 each.

At Alfond Arena in Orono, Branislav Srnka scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the 10-0 Red Riots past the Wildcats Tuesday night.

Evan James added a goal and an assist for Orono, and Pat Skall and Mike Merritt each had a goal. Will Toner also had an assist. Nate Faulstick made 15 saves on 17 shots.

Trevor Graves and Joe Collins posted a goal apiece for 5-5 Presque Isle, Darren Carlisle recorded two assists and Graves one. Travis Shaw made 23 saves on 28 shots.

At Danforth, Amanda Godley poured in 29 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to power Southern Aroostook of Dyer Brook to victory over East Grand.

Marie Gilman scored 13 points for the Warriors.

Olivia McGary led the Vikings with 19 points, while Tiffany Hartin and Kristi Brooker contributed 14 and 11, respectively.
