FORT KENT – The town has acquired a $10,000 grant from the State Planning Office to update its nearly 10-year-old comprehensive plan.

The present plan, approved by residents in June 1993, has accomplished most of its goals, Town Manager Donald Guimond said Wednesday. “A lot has been accomplished from the goals in the present comprehensive plan,” Guimond said. “We need new goals, and a new look at the town.

“Since it is an update, we would like to get this completed by the end of 2002,” he said.

Guimond said the town needs to incorporate the newly opened Maine Winter Sports Center in its plans.

The town also has accomplished many of its 1993 goals, such as construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, reconstruction of East Main Street, and construction of a new bridge over the Fish River at Fort Kent Mills.

The town has contracted with the Northern Maine Development Commission to help update the plan.

The $10,000 grant will be supplemented by a 33 percent match from the town.

In other business Monday night, the town accepted the resignation of Robin Damboise, the town’s planning and economic development director for the past nine months. She has accepted a job in the human resources department at Northern Maine Medical Center.

The Town Council will review the job description for the position at its next meeting, on Jan. 28. It will decide that night what direction to take with the position.
