DEDHAM – Four people were injured Wednesday morning in a four-vehicle accident near the Green Lake Road on Route 1A.
It could have been a lot worse, if not for the quick reflexes of a Bangor truck driver, according to witnesses.
Bruce Jordan of East Holden was stopped in traffic on Route 1A waiting to turn left onto the Green Lake Road, according to reports from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.
Jordan’s car was struck from behind by a van driven by Carl Martin of Brewer. The impact pushed Jordan’s Jeep into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a pickup truck driven by Kenneth Potter Jr. of Ellsworth.
The vehicles were spread across the road when Lewis Denbow of Bangor reached the scene driving a flatbed delivery truck loaded with building supplies from Granville Lumber in East Holden.
“I was just getting up to speed, when I saw all that,” Denbow said Wednesday.
Reacting quickly, he veered to the right to avoid hitting Jordan’s Jeep and then tried to pull back to the left to avoid the van. The 40,000-pound truck just grazed the side of the van, leaving small, red marks along its side.
“That guy saved a lot of lives,” Dedham-Lucerne Fire Chief Frank Myatt said.
“I was just trying to do the least amount of damage I could without going into the woods,” Denbow said.
All the people in the other vehicles were injured. Jordan received back injuries, and a passenger in his vehicle, Maddison Jordan, a juvenile, had head and back injuries. Martin complained of chest plain, and Potter suffered a broken leg, cuts and abrasions.
Bruce and Maddison Jordan and Potter were treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and released, according to a hospital nursing supervisor. No information was available for Martin.
Traffic was backed up on the well-traveled road in both directions as emergency personnel arrived at the accident scene.
The three vehicles involved in the initial accident were demolished in the accident, according to reports. Damage to the flatbed was estimated at $500.
