BANGOR – Phillips-Strickland House will celebrate its 25th anniversary this month with a dinner and program at noon Jan. 24 at 21 Boyd St.
The facility began in 1974 as the Home for Aged Women, inspired by the dream of Mary Phillips. Some years later, the Home for Aged Men was opened, due in large part to efforts of Lysander Strickland, a Bangor merchant, mayor and member of the Maine House of Representatives.
The current residential care program for senior citizens opened in 1977 after the merging of the two facilities, and it is now a senior care community offering an array of services. Over 25 years, 384 seniors have lived there. Forty-eight residents call Phillips-Strickland House home today.
The anniversary dinner will include a special menu, with residents each inviting a guest for the day.
Entertainment will be provided by Joel Moreault and Zachary Field. The program will include presentations by executive director Nelson Durgin and Richard Hanson, president of the corporation.
Awards will be given to two employees who have served residents for more than a quarter-century, dating back to the Home for Aged Women and Home for Aged Men.
In addition, Durgin will recognize three residents who have lived at Phillips-Strickland for more than 13 years.
Residents also have been involved in creating the festivities for the day.
In addition to the residential care facility, Phillips-Strickland recently added a complex of 30 apartments for more independent seniors, Boyd Place.
