YMCA hires new director of wellness

OLD TOWN – The Old Town-Orono YMCA has hired Maria Lynn Biron to serve as its first wellness director.

Biron, a native of Lewiston, earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Castleton State College in Vermont, and has extensive experience in the field of health and fitness.

She is certified as a lifeguard, and in CPR, first aid, water aerobics and first-responder training. She now is working toward certification in Principles of Fitness and Personal Training through the YMCA.

“Maria will be overseeing our fitness department and working with members and staff to create new programs such as the cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs,” said YMCA Executive Director Gary Baldwin. “I am excited to hire someone of Maria’s caliber to focus on the health and fitness needs of our members.”

Before coming to the Old Town-Orono YMCA, Biron had been employed by the Bangor YMCA. Her professional background includes serving as a lifeguard, water aerobics instructor, personal and strength trainer, cardiac coordinator and swimming instructor.

“I’d like to meet current and potential YMCA members, and I want to encourage people in the community to stop by the Y to see what it has to offer individuals and families,” Biron said.

For more information on programs and membership, call the Old Town-Orono YMCA at 827-YMCA, 827-9622.
