Bangor Hydro Electric Co. crews Friday continued the slow process of restoring power to approximately 200 customers still in the dark five days after a major snowstorm downed wires and snapped poles across a wide portion of the state.
Meanwhile, Central Maine Power Co. crews completed the job of restoring electricity to its remaining customers affected by the outages. A few new outages reported in the Rockland-Belfast area Friday were caused by some wires snapping back into position as ice melted from them. Those outages were expected to be repaired by Friday night, CMP reported.
At the height of the problem, CMP had 60,000 customers without power while Bangor Hydro had 10,000 customers blacked out. Customers are service accounts, not individual people. The number of people affected is significantly greater.
“Most of the people who haven’t been reconnected have particularly nasty problems, such as multiple issues in their front yard or in their neighbor’s yard,” said Jennifer Brooker, spokeswoman for Bangor Hydro. “These types of problems take a longer time to fix.”
Hancock County and parts of Penobscot County remained the focus for Bangor Hydro line crews, who were assisted by crews from Maine Public Service of Presque Isle and New Brunswick Power of Canada. Crews expected to continue working until 8 p.m. Friday and will return to complete the job first thing this morning, according to a statement released by Bangor Hydro.
Any Bangor Hydro customers still without service who have not contacted the company for at least 24 hours are asked to call the outage line at (800) 440-1111 or 973-2020.
