A 43-year-old Carmel man punched another man and allegedly chased him and threatened to kill him, all for $10 he claimed he was owed.
Richard E. Hyson was charged with assault and criminal threatening with a dangerous weapon Thursday night following the incident at the Galt Block Warehouse on Bennett Street in Bangor.
A 25-year-old Carmel man said he was working on a forklift at the warehouse when a woman approached him asking about the $10 he owed Hyson, the man told Officer Myron Warner. When he told her he didn’t have any money, she left, but Hyson returned and asked for the $10.
Police said Hyson punched him in the mouth when he said he couldn’t pay and the man managed to jump off the forklift and get some garbage cans between them, according to the man and witnesses. A supervisor demanded that Hyson leave, but Hyson chased both men into an office.
The alleged victim said Hyson prevented him from closing the office door so he threw a stapler at him and then a tape gun when Hyson continued to kick the door open. A witness reported seeing Hyson back off briefly after being hit in the head with the tape gun.
The 25-year-old man said he closed the door and looked out the window where he saw Hyson holding a knife. Hyson claimed he was going to kill the other man and knew where he lived.
Hyson left the warehouse before police arrived, but showed up at the police station at 11:30 p.m. – 90 minutes after police were first contacted – to claim he was the victim in the incident and show police the cut on his head. Hyson told Warner that the other man uncharacteristically became angry and began yelling and throwing things at him.
The woman with Hyson gave Warner the same story, but Warner had many other witnesses who corroborated the other man’s side of the story and Warner arrested Hyson.
Bangor police arrested 39-year-old Scott Martin of Bar Harbor on a warrant and also charged him with possession of scheduled drugs early Friday morning.
Martin came to the attention of police about 12:45 a.m., after he stopped at the intersection of Garland and Elm streets and a woman got out of the passenger side of the car and walked off. Martin backed up with the passenger-side door still open and parked the 1994 Toyota Tercel, reported Officer Rob Angelo. The woman returned to the road and began yelling at Martin.
A computer check on Martin indicated he was wanted in Hancock County for failure to appear in court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicants. He was arrested and searched, with police finding a hypodermic needle in one of his pockets.
Inside the car, police found a sunglasses case containing a small white “rock,” a small amount of marijuana and two pipes police suspected were used for smoking marijuana. Officer James Hassard reported finding a digital scale and a bag containing a white powder underneath clothing in the trunk of the car.
