Sullivan crash blamed on driver inattention

SULLIVAN – Driver inattention led to a crash that put a Sumner Memorial High School student in the hospital Sunday evening.

Maine State Police said Meghan Ruhlin, 16, pulled onto U.S. Route 1 in front of the school at about 5 p.m. when a car driven by Evon Glick, 30, of Winter Harbor struck the side door of Ruhlin’s 1994 GMC pickup truck.

Ruhlin was leaving an open gym event for her varsity basketball team when the accident occurred.

She had been heading back to her Gouldsboro home when Glick’s 1998 Subaru Outback struck her truck, Maine State Trooper Cliff Peterson said.

Ruhlin had not seen the oncoming traffic when she pulled onto the highway, Peterson said.

Ruhlin, who was wearing a seat belt, was taken to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth where she was to be treated for multiple abrasions, lacerations and possible broken bones, the officer said. Glick was not wearing a seat belt, but was saved from injury by her vehicle’s airbag.

“There is no indication that this was a high-speed accident,” said Peterson. “The accident was caused by driver inattention.”

Ruhlin, who is the starting shooting guard for her basketball team, is one of the team’s top scorers.

No charges have been filed in the accident.
