ALFRED – A Kennebunk woman who police say was behind the wheel of the car that killed a state senator’s sister-in-law nearly two years ago is scheduled to go on trial Tuesday on a manslaughter charge in York County Superior Court.

Amanda R. Spaulding, 20, is charged in the death of Pamela McAlevey, 69, of Lyman, a retired teacher in the Kennebunk school system.

Police said Spaulding’s car was traveling at a speed of at least 55 mph in a 35 mph zone on Cole Road on April 6, 2000, when it crashed head-on into McAlevey’s vehicle while rounding a tight curve.

McAlevey, the sister-in-law of state Sen. Michael McAlevey, R-Waterboro, was flown by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, where she died.

Spaulding and her passenger, Allen Nagy, then 20, were treated for injuries.

Spaulding was indicted in October 2000 on a charge of manslaughter and two counts of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon.
