Toner’s goal in OT lifts Riots to victory

ORONO – Will Toner’s second goal of the game, coming with 1:28 left in overtime, lifted Orono to a 2-1 schoolboy hockey victory over Hampden Academy at Alfond Arena Monday afternoon.

The 12-0 Red Riots extended their regular-season winning streak to 36 games dating back to February, 2000.

“Brano (Branislav Srnka) gave it to Mike Merritt [behind the net] and Mike got it out to me,” said Toner, who was parked just beyond the top of the crease. “I shot it high to the glove side.”

Toner had forced the overtime by scoring a shorthanded goal with 6:20 remaining as he took a pass from behind the net by Srnka and roofed an eight-footer over the stick-side shoulder of Broncos goalie Garrett Macgowan.

“I tried to one-time it to where I saw the most open net and I got lucky,” said Toner.

Andy Caldwell’s first goal of the season staked Hampden to a 1-0 lead in the first period as he snapped home a 16-footer off the glove of Riots goalie Nate Faulstick off a two-on-one with Colin Ingram, who fed him the puck.

Freshman Faulstick made 19 saves for Orono while Macgowan had 34 for 6-6 Hampden.

Orono senior Pat Skall, who was taken to Bangor’s Eastern Maine Medical Center by ambulance after a center-ice collision in the second period, was released from EMMC. He said Monday night he has a strained neck and hoped to be back at practice today.
