STARKS – A crash on Route 43 killed two elderly sisters and put a third in the hospital Tuesday.
The Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said the driver, 68-year-old Thelma Bean, apparently lost control on a slippery patch of road before the car rolled over and landed upside-down in a ditch.
The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. about 11/2 miles south of the intersection of West Mills Road as the sisters traveled north toward Anson.
Bean and Ethel Foss, 65, were declared dead at the scene. The sisters lived together in Starks.
A third sister, 71-year-old Gertrude Robbins of North Anson, was pinned in the car and removed by rescue workers using extrication equipment.
Robbins was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan, where she was reported in serious condition with internal injuries, a hospital spokesman said.
Robbins was later taken by medical helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was reported in fair condition Wednesday evening.
