DEER ISLE – Zone defenses designed to make it tough for Deer Isle-Stonington’s 5-foot-9 center Meghan Wiberg instead made it relatively easy for everyone else in the Mariners’ matchup against Lubec Wednesday evening.
The Mariners used patient passing to wait for open perimeter shots – and pumped it in to Wiberg when they could – as DI-Stonington earned a 42-30 victory at the high school gym here.
DI-Stonington is 5-7 and Lubec fell to 5-8.
Wiberg scored 13 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against Lubec’s 2-3 and 1-3-1 zones, which she said didn’t bother her.
“I usually get double-teamed anyway, so I usually try to drive by and make layups,” Wiberg said.
Jenna Eaton chipped in with 10 points, including six in the first quarter as the Mariners had a 10-2 lead by the end of the period. She opened the game with a long jumper and that’s how DI-S seemed to get its points early. Eaton scored off a turnover and hit two more jumpers in the first half.
“The first quarter kind of sealed it for us,” Eaton said. “We usually have a bad half, so it’s good when we can play like this the whole game.”
Lubec’s Amber Lavalley opened the second quarter with a free throw, but the Mariners went on an 8-2 run thanks to two Wiberg free throws, an Eaton jumper, a Wiberg layup off a pass from Eaton, and a 10-footer from Heather Bray (eight rebounds).
The Hornets outscored the Mariners 12-9 in the fourth quarter.
Offensively, it may have been a matter of the Mariners making more of their field-goal attempts, although neither team shot well: DI-S was 19-for-64, Lubec went 14-for-56. The Hornets had an atypical shooting night, according to Lubec coach David Rice.
“We couldn’t score today,” he said. “We missed a lot of layups, a lot of shots. We didn’t turn the ball over, but we just couldn’t shoot. We average about 50 points a ballgame and we scored [30] tonight. You aren’t going to win many ballgames doing that. The kids played hard, we just didn’t make many.”
DI-S held Lubec’s Leann Pike to 13 points (she has been scoring about 20 points per game), but Mariner coach Dana McGraw wasn’t satisfied with his team’s defense on the 5-9 sophomore center. The Mariners played man-to-man defense on the Hornets and threw in a zone press, which Lubec seemed to handle.
“We gave her some opportunities to score,” McGraw said. “We’d get up 15, 16 and she’d make a couple of baskets. I thought we could play a little better on her.”
Pike also led the Hornets with eight rebounds.
Lubec coach David Rice said he had seen something in Wiberg’s game that he thought the Hornets could exploit.
“She grabs the ball when she shoots and she jumps in, so we thought we would draw a few offensive fouls that way,” he said. “The refs didn’t exactly see it that way.”
