ORONO – Twelve members of a Vietnamese family finished a 10,000 mile journey to Orono Wednesday night, bringing little with them but the clothes on their backs and the hope for a better life in America.
The group – nine adults and three children – range in age from 3 to 71.
They fled years of political persecution and dim hopes for their children’s future to join their relatives.
Their arrival signals the end of a 17-year saga of paperwork and frustrating delay, the group said Thursday.
Few of them speak English and they relied on Hanh Bulhon of Orono to translate their sentiments.
