Officials find ATM in Carrabassett River

FARMINGTON – Burglars who stole 50 cartons of cigarettes, two cases of beer and an entire ATM from a convenience store dumped the smashed cash machine into the Carrabassett River, police said.

Police officers in wet suits retrieved pieces of the ATM from the partially frozen river over the weekend.

No arrests have been made in the robbery of Jack’s Trading Post in Farmington. Police said they have one suspect, a white male taped by a surveillance camera at about 10:30 p.m. Friday.

Authorities also are looking for a full-sized, red and white Ford Bronco seen on the tape. They believe the suspect may have had accomplices.

Rick Wells, who owns the store on Route 4, reported the burglary when he arrived to open for business at around 5 a.m. Saturday.

The burglar or burglars broke in through a side door, police said. One of the store’s cash registers was damaged but no cash was missing.

A passer-by later noticed the ATM, which had held an undisclosed amount of cash, lying on ice beneath the Wire Bridge off Route 27.

Police said that pieces of the 300-pound cash machine would be sent to the state crime laboratory in Augusta to be checked for fingerprints.
