BANGOR – A group show scheduled for Feb. 6 through March 29 at Clark House Gallery, “Art in Bloom: Flower Paintings and Photographs,” will highlight images of flowers from 10 prominent artists from throughout New England.
The artists are Rita Baragona, Paul Black, Robert Carsten, Michael Costello, Francoise Gervais, Nancy Glassman, June Grey, Gaylen Morgan, Lyn Mayewski and Rachel Schiro.
Flowers can be found in fields in landscapes, in vases in still-life pieces and in closer views, almost like botanical studies,” said Susan Maasch, director of the Clark House Gallery. “The work will range from more distant views of flowers in fields in pieces by Black to close-up studies of flowers by Costello and Carsten.
Just as there are so many different types of flowers in various colors, forms and shapes, the work of each artist is also distinct.
A wide spectrum of styles and mediums will be displayed, from impressionistic landscapes to detailed still-life pieces including oil, acrylic, watercolor, black and white and color photography as well as digital prints.
Baragona, one of these featured artists, has received much praise for what critic Jed Perl called her “miniaturized visions of paradise.”
“What a nature painter must do is impose some human logic or private poetry on the natural world,” said Purl. “By this measure, Rita Baragona is a very interesting painter.”
The public is welcome to celebrate “this promise of spring,” Maasch said, at the opening reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7.
The gallery’s winter hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and other times by appointment.
The gallery is located at 128 Hammond St. For information, call 942-9162 or check the Web site at www.clarkhousegallery.com.
