Gomm helps Brewer rally by Ellsworth

ELLSWORTH – Chad Gomm scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, including eight in the third quarter, as Brewer posted a 43-41 schoolboy basketball win over Ellsworth Wednesday night.

Jon Bell tossed in 15 for Brewer.

Adam Smith scored 14 and Jake King had 10 points and eight rebounds for Ellsworth, which made two free throws with 17 seconds to play to cut the lead to two, then missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer after forcing a turnover.

At Lee, Frank Severance led the way with 28 points and eight rebounds as the Pandas used solid free-throw shooting and 3-point shooting to upset the Wolverines.

Severance scored 19 of his points in the first half. Josh Thompson scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. He also added four assists and four steals.

Frank Carpenter chipped in 15 points and Dustin Pickering grabbed 11 rebounds. The Pandas were 9-for-13 from the free-throw line down the stretch. They also buried 10 of 22 3-pointers.

Seth Johnson led the way for Schenck of East Millinocket with 20 points and six assists. Ryan Deschenes poured in 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Pat Jamo contributed 13 points.

Luke Hayden tallied 14 points for the Warriors. McLellan scored 16 of his 40 in the fourth quarter.

At Sukee Arena in Winslow, Josh Caldwell scored a goal and assisted on two others and Will Prescott added a goal and an assist as the Witches improved to 8-5.

Matt Grimes and A.J. Hayes scored a goal apiece for Brewer while Josh Kochis had an assist. Spencer Dunbar made 16 saves.

Roland Bullock converted a Nick Porto assist for the 5-8 Bulldogs of Fairfield. Jacob Mitchell made 25 stops.

Orono 4, Winslow 2

At Winslow, senior right winger Mike Merritt’s goal with 6:49 remaining broke a 2-2 tie and he added an empty-netter 5:31 later as Orono beat Winslow for the second time this season.

Merritt took a pass from Pat Skall, went in alone on goalie Tim Cloutier and converted. The third member of the line, Will Toner, also assisted. Skall and Toner also assisted on Merritt’s empty-netter.

Brano Srnka scored a pair of second-period goals 50 seconds apart for 14-1 Orono. They were sandwiched by goals from Winslow’s Gabe Joseph and Jason Carter. The four goals came in a span of 2:25.

Nick Dwyer and Mark Caggiano had assists for Orono and Casey Hale finished with 30 saves.

Chris Langlais had an assist for 11-5 Winslow and Cloutier made 24 stops.
