Olympic torchbearer wows youngsters at YMCA

OLD TOWN – The Old Town-Orono YMCA After School Activity Program had a special visitor recently when Reuben “Butch” Phillips of Milford dazzled the children with his dream-come-true tale.

Phillips had the thrill of carrying the Olympic torch in New Hampshire last month as part of the national torch relay in preparation for the Olympic Games. As part of the relay, Phillips carried the torch three-tenths of a mile before handing the torch to the next runner.

In his 20-minute presentation Phillips shared photos of the event and answered the children’s questions. The children in the ASAP program were especially impressed with Phillips’ torch and his official torch relay warm-up suit.

“We were very fortunate to have such a special guest speak with our kids. His story captures the Olympic spirit,” commented Anne Ware, childcare director for the YMCA.

In addition to the thrill of participating in the event, Phillips, a tribal elder for the Penobscot Nation, said that having his three sons and granddaughter run beside him was unbelievable.

The Old Town-Orono YMCA After School Activity Program regularly hosts speakers to enhance the children’s experience. For information on the YMCA’s childcare programs, call 827-YMCA (827-9622).
