NEWPORT, Vt. – A Maine man was arrested after allegedly stealing a delivery truck from his employer and leading police on a four-hour chase through three states early Saturday, police said.
The chase ended when the truck went off the road near the Canadian border.
Jason Merriam, 20, of Sumner was arrested and charged with drunken driving, attempting to elude a police officer and possession of stolen property, Vermont police said. He also is expected to face charges in New Hampshire and Maine.
A manager at Quality Egg in Turner, Maine, reported the truck stolen around 4:30 a.m., Maine State Police Trooper Abby Chabot said. According to Maine authorities, Merriam was suicidal when he left his home and stole the truck after an altercation with a co-worker.
Police caught up with the vehicle roughly two hours later. They followed the truck through Maine and New Hampshire on U.S. Route 2, but Merriam refused to pull over, Chabot said.
At one point, Merriam was driving on the wrong side of the road and later crossed over a traffic median and nearly collided with several cars, police said.
The pursuit ended around 8:15 a.m. after Vermont State Police placed spikes in the road to deflate the vehicle’s tires. The truck went off the road a couple miles later on Route 105, police said.
“It was of the level where continuing the chase was likely to cause more damage,” Chabot said. “His operation was so erratic and negligent.”
The 1996 Ford truck was empty, police said.
