BATH – The Mt. Blue wrestling team tallied 188 points and had five wrestlers earn individual championships as the Cougars of Farmington claimed the Eastern Maine Class A wrestling championship Saturday at Morse High School.
It is the third straight regional title for Mt. Blue, which was second at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championship meet last week.
Skowhegan earned the runner-up title with 1221/2 points. Oxford Hills of South Paris was third (119).
The top four wrestlers in each weight division will go to the Class A state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the Bangor Auditorium.
Brewer High will send five wrestlers to states, including Jeff Madden, who won his championship final match at 171 with a 7-2 decision over Skowhegan’s Dean Redlevske. Madden may be the first Brewer wrestler to win an Eastern Maine championship since the school’s program started four years ago.
Scott Philipps (140), Chris Noyes (145), Ryan Hahl (152), and Nathan Grant (275) all finished in fourth place for the Witches, who were eighth overall.
Three Nokomis High of Newport wrestlers made it to the top four. Kyle Munn won the 215 consolation final with a pin of Oxford Hills’ Tyler Guerin, while Dale Smart (125) and Pat Morse (130) finished fourth in their respective weight divisions.
The Cougars opened the championship round with three straight wins at 103, 112 and 119.
