CALAIS – Walt Whitman did it. So did Abraham Lincoln. And the American Cancer Society is asking you to do it, too.
In his youth, Honest Abe was captain of a volunteer company in the Black Hawk War in 1832. Poet Walt Whitman was a volunteer hospital nurse in Washington during the Civil War.
This year, the cancer society is looking for volunteers to help make its popular Daffodil Days a success in the Calais area. Daffodil Days will take place March 27-30.
Volunteers work with society staff to place promotional posters, collect orders, distribute pre-ordered flowers and sell daffodils at various locations within their communities
“Volunteers bring their unique blend of talents and interests to further the fight against cancer,” said Julie Krzanik of the American Cancer Society. “The event … also allows local residents to work together in a common goal: to help those touched by cancer.”
Fresh daffodils will be available for $6 per bouquet at Paradis Shop ‘n Save in Calais and at the Shop ‘n Save in Machias. Money raised will support the society’s local service programs for cancer patients and their families.
Those who want to volunteer or place orders in advance of Daffodil Days may do so by calling the American Cancer Society at (800) 464-3102, Ext. 3728. Flowers must be ordered by March 8.
