LAWRENCE, Mass. – A woman was struck and killed by an Amtrak train as she tried to cross the tracks in Lawrence Sunday afternoon.
The 22-year-old woman was struck by a northbound train late in the afternoon, Amtrak spokeswoman Karen Dunn said. The train was the Downeaster, Amtrak’s new Boston to Portland, Maine, run.
The train’s driver told investigators that she saw someone step onto the track and she blew the train’s horn a number of times to no avail, Dunn said.
The victim’s name has not been made public yet, she said.
The train was delayed more than two hours.
