BOSTON – The University of Maine Black Bears defeated second-ranked Northeastern 4-3 in overtime on Karen Droog’s game-winning goal from the red-line in women’s hockey action Friday.
Maine got on the board first with a goal from Christine Lane in the first period. It was the first goal that Northeastern goalie Marisa Hourihan had allowed all season in more than 245 minutes in the net.
Northeastern responded with a goal from Brooke Whitney 34 seconds later off assists from Erica Archambeau and Kim Greene. The Huskies added another goal by Pamela Pachal before Maine’s Meagan Aarts tied the game with her 21st goal of the season on a power play.
The Black Bears took a 3-2 lead on a goal by Aarts off a Droog assist. Michelle Lorion tied the game for the Huskies at 16:30 in the third period to send the game into overtime.
Dan Froats had 37 saves for the Black Bears in the win. Hourihan stopped 33 shots for Northeastern. Maine is now 14-12-2 overall and 6-9-2 in the ECAC. Northeastern is 23-4-0 overall and 13-3-0 on the ECAC.
