MONTICELLO – A Massachusetts man with head injuries was taken Sunday to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after a snowmobile accident early that morning.

Wardens are withholding the name of the victim and those involved in the accident pending notification of relatives.

The man, described by Warden Sgt. Tom Ward as in his late 40s, was traveling on the middle machine in a group of three with two friends at 7:45 a.m. on the railroad bed near Harvey Siding in Monticello.

He was struck in the head by the third snowmobile in the group after being thrown clear of his own sled when it hit a bump in the trail.

The victim was wearing a helmet, Ward said, and he initially was taken to Houlton Regional Hospital by ambulance. Doctors determined there was some bleeding on the brain and transferred him to EMMC.

Warden Scot Martin responded to the report of the accident, which remained under investigation as of Sunday afternoon.
