John Bapst boys, Hampden girls win titles Presque Isle girls, Madawaska boys, Mt. Blue boys and girls take league crowns

SQUAW MOUNTAIN – John Bapst High School of Bangor captured the boys overall championship and Hampden Academy won the girls title Saturday during the final day of the Penobscot Valley Conference Skiing Championships at Squaw Mountain Resort.

The Crusader boys compiled a score of 106 during the four-event competition to edge runner-up Hampden Academy, which finished with 119 points. Lee Academy (149) placed third and Piscataquis Community High of Guilford (250) was fourth.

Only teams that scored in all four events – slalom, giant slalom, classic cross country and freestyle cross country – were eligible for the PVC overall crown.

The Broncos annexed the PVC girls overall title by scoring 81 points. John Bapst was second with 104 points, Piscataquis (206) took third and Lee (224) was fourth.

In the Skimeister competition, which combines the best finishes in the four events, Matt Moretti of Hampden took boys honors. Bruce Stevens of Lee was second and Corey O’Brien of Hampden finished third.

Spencer Stacey of Lee and Hampden Eric Kelmenson wound up tied for fourth.

Emily O’Connell of Hampden, who won Saturday’s giant slalom, was the girls Skimeister. She outlasted teammate Jillian Campbell, the runner-up, while Eva Murdoch and Meghan Lena of John Bapst placed third and fourth, respectively.

O’Connell recorded a combined time of 1 minute, 21.19 seconds. Lindsay Mallar of John Bapst and Lee’s Samantha Braziller were second and third, respectively.

In Saturday’s boys giant slalom action, Brian Dupuis of Mattanawcook Academy in Lincoln took top honors with a combined time of 1:15.29 seconds. Rodney Folsom of Greenville was second and Hermon’s Matt Pellerin claimed third.

Lee Academy took boys GS team honors with 32 points, edging runner-up Hampden (34) and third-place Greenville (36).

John Bapst had swept Thursday’s nordic races at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center, while the John Bapst girls won the classic event and were second in the freestyle.

The Hampden girls were runners-up in both nordic events after having won the slalom competition last week at Hermon Mountain. The Lee Academy boys were victorious in the boys slalom.

Aroostook League Championships

At Bigrock Ski Area in Mars Hill, the Presque Isle girls and the boys team from Madawaska annexed team championships in the Aroostook League meet that concluded Saturday.

The Wildcat girls scored 82 points and finished well ahead of runner-up Fort Kent (143) and Madawaska (147). Sarah Gahagan of Presque Isle posted fourth-place finishes in Saturday’s slalom and giant slalom events to win the girls Skimeister Award with 21 points.

Gahagan had taken fifth in the cross country freestyle and was eighth in the XC classic. Jackie Masse of Fort Kent was second with 33 points, while Presque Isle’s Stephanie Holton (36) and Rosa Londono (37) of Madawaska took third and fourth, respectively.

In the boys meet, the Owls held off runner-up Fort Kent 110-125, while Presque Isle (181) claimed third place.

J.J. Pinette of Fort Kent placed sixth in the slalom and 10th in the GS to tally 43 points and edge Zach Smith (49) of Presque Isle and Jacques Ouellette (50) of Fort Kent to earn the distinction as the boys Skimeister.

Pinette had finished 13th in the freestyle and 14th in the classic in last week’s XC races.

Ouellette swept the slalom and giant slalom races held Saturday. He won the slalom in 1:21.59, more than three seconds ahead of teammate Brandon Conover. He stopped the timer in 1:25.20 on his two GS runs, which was .29 seconds ahead of runner-up Matt Lavertu of Madawaska.

Sarah Belden of Presque Isle came away as the Aroostook slalom champ, posting a combined time of 1:27.56. Londono, who placed second in the slalom, had won the giant slalom earlier in the day.

Her time of 1:26.06 was a mere hundreth of a second better than second-place finisher Kristin Guerrette of Madawaska.

KVAC Championships

At Titcomb Slope in West Farmington, Mt. Blue High of Farmington’s boys and girls teams swept the classic cross country and slalom events Saturday to come away as overall winners in the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Skiing Championships.

The Cougars captured the girls crown with an overall score of 73 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Leavitt of Turner Center’s 156 points. Maranacook of Readfield (214) was third.

Mt. Blue also posted a comfortable win in the boys competition. The Cougars’ 82 points beat out second-place Maranacook (118) and third-place Leavitt (220).

Nate Dumais of Leavitt was the boys Skimeister after placing 21st in the slalom and 22nd in the classic cross country events on Saturday. Steve Monsulick of Maranacook was second and Leavitt’s Kendall Ricker placed third.

Molly Hardy of Mt. Blue was the Skimeister for the girls. She finished fourth in the XC classic and 22nd in the slalom.

Maranacook teammates Lia Prysunka and Neile Riley were second and third, respectively.

The Mt. Blue boys and girls both won each of the four disciplines, including Saturday’s XC classic and slalom events.

In the boys slalom, Mt. Blue scored 25 points to beat Maranacook (40) and Leavitt (43). Brian Cook of Maranacook won the event in 1 minute, 11.41 seconds.

The Cougars posted 21 points to overcome Maranacook (51) and Oxford Hills of South Paris (58) in the girls slalom. Kristy Hoch of Erskine Academy in South China was the individual winner in 1:16.37 seconds.

Kristina Hines of Mt. Blue took individual honors in the classic XC race with a time of 16:41. The Cougars had 18 points, while Leavitt (23) and Maranacook (45) claimed the Nos. 2-3 spots.

In the boys classic XC event, Seth Hubbard covered the course in 14:20 to lead Mt. Blue (13 points) to the title. Maranacook was second with 24 points and Leavitt (54) finished third.
